Long before unusual metals became part of modern watchmaking, Audemars Piguet was already experimenting with tantalum. The 56175TR was one of the very first Royal Oaks to use the metal in 1988, pairing its naturally blue-grey tone and surprising weight with warm 18k rose gold, a combination that still feels unusual nearly four decades later. Tantalum is notoriously difficult to work with, which makes seeing it carried through the case and integrated bracelet all the more special. At 33mm it wears closer to a 36mm Datejust, and this example comes as a full set with its original box and papers. It is a wonderfully quirky piece of AP history from an era when the manufacture was willing to experiment with the Royal Oak in ways few others were attempting.
