Born during the quartz crisis of the 1970s, the Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust 17000 was Rolex’s own take on the future of watchmaking. This piece features a rare early mk 1 dial. Launched in 1977, the Oysterquartz was Rolex’s bold answer to a changing watch industry, with its angular case and integrated bracelet giving it a look that felt completely different from the traditional Datejust. The Mk1 was only produced for roughly the first 18 months before Rolex moved to the later chronometer-certified dial, making these early examples a much smaller part of an already limited production story. Rolex is estimated to have produced only around 25,000 Oysterquartz watches across all references over roughly 25 years, and today the design feels even more relevant as part of the same integrated-bracelet lineage Rolex has revisited with the modern Land-Dweller.
