Unveiled in the mid-1990s, the Credor Signo GBBD998 represents a seminal chapter in Seiko’s pursuit of haute horlogerie. Established in 1974, Credor—named after Crête d’Or, or Golden Crest—was created to express the pinnacle of Japanese watchmaking. This reference, cased in 18K yellow gold and powered by the exquisitely thin, hand-wound Caliber 6899A at just 1.98mm, holds the distinction of being Japan’s first commercially produced skeleton movement.
The entire movement—including bridges, plates, and skeletonized components—is delicately hand-engraved with traditional motifs, most notably the imperial chrysanthemum, executed by a young Kiyoshi Terui—now revered as one of Seiko’s master engravers. Using bespoke tools developed in-house, Terui achieved a fusion of Japanese and Western engraving styles, defined by remarkable depth, polish, and finesse. Seldom encountered and quietly significant, the GBBD998 remains an underappreciated treasure—a rare and poetic embodiment of Japanese artistry, offering collectors both technical pedigree and timeless beauty.
