The Royal Oak 56175TR is one of those references that gets far more interesting once you understand what it’s made from. Pairing rose gold with tantalum, a dense blue-grey metal that AP used only sparingly, it has a look and weight that feels completely different from the usual steel or gold Royal Oaks. Tantalum is notoriously difficult to machine, hard on tooling and expensive to work with, which is a big part of why watches like this were produced in relatively small numbers. Finding a 56175TR today is already uncommon, but finding one as a full set is another level entirely, and that completeness adds a lot for collectors on a reference this niche. It’s a proper piece of AP’s experimental era, when the Royal Oak was being pushed into materials few other brands were willing to touch.
